Basement Finishing

Today more than ever, people are looking at ideas for their future finished basements. It may be easier than you think to expand your living space into your basement.  Utilizing your unfinished basement is space is an easy way of expanding the square footage of your home without building an expensive addition.

Finished basements can create more space for the kids to hang out, or an out of sight space for all those toys. More people are working from home and a home office is ideal for quiet uninterrupted space. Maybe a cool hang out space for entertaining friends is just what you need to kick up your social life.

There are some important steps to take before launching your basement finishing project.

  • First, be sure your basement is dry and has no structural concerns. Finishing over a foundation that has early warning signs of an issue only means future damage to your finishing investment.
  • Try to prioritize your goals for how you want to use the space, this will help in the design of the layout. Maybe the home office is more important than the model train room for example, or vice versa.
  • Maybe one of the hardest steps in preparing is nailing down a budget, but it is a critical one. If you don’t have a hard number in mind, try to identify a range for the investment.  For example, some people invest over $50k in their finished basements and others $15k.  Having a target even if it is fuzzy will help your designer come up with a plan that meets your priority goals and budget.
